This week @EAMS, Technology students used the Engineering Design Process to research, design, test and evaluate mousetrap cars! This hands-on project is a fantastic way to explore simple machines, use a variety of tools, and test their problem-solving abilities as they aim for maximum distance. 86 feet was the farthest of the group! Awesome work!

Spring has arrived at the sustainable agriculture lab. Yesterday morning, 100 chicks arrived at the ag lab. These chicks will be taken care of until late May when they will be processed by the class to sell for our spring chicken sale.
Our new Troy Bilt roto tiller is being put to use! This new addition to our farm was a gift from EA resident, Tom Hagner. Operating the tiller for the first time, is his granddaughter, a member of our Sustainable Agriculture Class.

Earth acts as a giant magnet with magnetic poles and a magnetic field over which it exerts magnetic force. In their “Earth’s Interior” lesson, EAMS students model the earth’s magnetic properties by using iron filings to observe the 2 and 3- D field lines around a magnet.
Our Farm 2 School taste test took place yesterday at the High School. Perry Schmidt, our new company dietitian, stopped out and helped set everything up. Today's recipe was Potatoes O'Brien, featuring NYS baby red potatoes, NYS bell peppers, and NYS red onion. We served about 180 samples, and had a lot of positive feedback from the students and faculty.
We will be featuring the Potatoes O'Brien as a side dish for next week's "Breakfast for Lunch" day, where we will also be featuring locally made NYS Maple Syrup.

Sustainable Agriculture students visited 2 WNY Maple Syrup producers on March 12. The morning started out cold with a hike to a 60 acre maple grove with Brian at B & B Maple Products in Sheldon NY where students had a chance to see how the maple trees are tapped and what is involved with the collection of sap. Discussions involved topics like when and how the tapping is done and how the shifting climate of WNY can lead to difficulties for syrup producers. The students got to see the complex system of pipes and connectors used to collect the sugary sap. We then visited with Joe Meyer at Meyer Harvest Patch also located in Sheldon and saw his operation on how sap is turned into syrup. They learned about boiling points and specific gravity and how both of these factors can determine when syrup is done being processed and ready to be boiled. They discussed the economics of maple syrup production and what the available markets are for the product today. The students all agreed that the production of maple syrup is a unique aspect of the WNY agriculture economy and makes for some very great treats. Students had a chance to sample maple spread, candies , and various grades of syrup. It was truly a very sweet field trip indeed.

For the past week, eighth grade science students have been investigating how the rate of heat transfer is affected by mass. In this investigation, students gained valuable experience in developing different methodologies for measuring heat transfer in a closed system.

Rome had fun with being creative at STEAM class! We are all looking forward to Parkdale STEAM Night on Thursday, March 13th. Thank you to Mrs. Kaminski and the STEAM Night Committee for all of their hard work and planning!
