5 tenets of whole child at EA

This week, the East Aurora Union Free School District joins a nationwide “SEL”ebration for National SEL Week, an initiative dedicated to highlighting the importance of social and emotional learning in every community. The week officially kicks off with International #SELDay, a global movement to promote the systemic implementation of SEL.

At the heart of East Aurora’s mission is the belief that academic success is inextricably linked to a student’s emotional and social well-being. Our district operates under a comprehensive framework: Whole Child • Whole School • Whole Community.

Social and emotional learning isn't just an addition to our curriculum; it is the foundation upon which our students build their future. By focusing on the 'Whole Child,' we ensure our graduates are not just academically prepared, but are resilient, empathetic, and engaged citizens.

The Five Tenets of Success

To guide this mission, the district utilizes The Five Tenets, a strategic roadmap designed to ensure every student is supported from their first day of kindergarten through graduation:

  • Healthy: Each student enters school healthy and learns about and practices a healthy lifestyle.

  • Safe: Each student learns in an environment that is physically and emotionally safe for students and adults.

  • Engaged: Each student is actively engaged in learning and is connected to the school and broader community.

  • Supported: Each student has access to personalized learning and is supported by qualified, caring adults.

  • Challenged: Each student is challenged academically and prepared for success in college or further study and for employment and participation in a global environment.
