Navigating the world of special education can often feel like an isolating journey for families. Recognizing this challenge, the East Aurora Union Free School District (EAUFSD) has seen the successful growth of its Special Education Parent Teacher Student Association (SEPTSA), an organization dedicated to supporting, educating, and advocating for students with diverse learning needs.
Now in its second year of operation, SEPTSA differs from traditional school-based PTOs. As a State PTA-affiliated organization, it operates across the entire district, serving families from Parkdale Elementary through the East Aurora High School.
A "Landing Pad" for Families
According to SEPTSA President Allison Kiddie Higgins, the organization was born out of a need for community. "When parents first realize their child has special education needs... it feels really overwhelming," Higgins shared during a recent Blue Devil Podcast. "We hope to be a little bit of a landing pad to start to offer paths."
The organization serves as a communication link between the district and families, helping parents navigate new diagnoses, service requirements, and the often-complex world of state grants and educational advocacy.
Inclusion in Action: The Parkdale Playground
One of the most visible impacts of SEPTSA’s work is the upcoming renovation of the Parkdale Elementary Playground. Working in an advisory capacity alongside the Friends of East Aurora, SEPTSA is helping design a state-of-the-art, fully inclusive play space.
Key features of the proposed playground include:
Seamless rubber matting for wheelchair accessibility.
"Double swings" that allow students to swing with a peer or caregiver.
Communication boards to assist students with speech and language challenges.
Supporting "Unified" Programs
SEPTSA also acts as a primary supporter for the district’s Unified sports and clubs. These student-driven programs pair "typical" peers with students with disabilities to foster authentic friendships. While these programs are expanding from the high school down to the middle and elementary levels, SEPTSA serves as the "cheerleader," providing community backing for these student-led initiatives.
How to Get Involved
SEPTSA is open to all parents, teachers, and students within the district.
Meetings: Held monthly (usually Wednesday evenings) at rotating school locations.
Contact: Interested community members can email EASEPTSA@gmail.com or visit the SEPTSA website here.
