Each of East Aurora’s three schools are staffed with trained counselors, psychologists and social workers. However, sometimes the services needed by a child/family are beyond the role of a school-based professional. In addition, at times, families sometimes wish to address issues without involving the school. This is why we offer School Site Counseling Services with Community Providers!

What exactly is it?

The FSC recognizes that access to mental health services for children and families is limited and that
convenience is a determining factor in the ability for individuals to receive the mental health support they need.
As such, the Family Support Center of East Aurora offers approved community partners a space in its buildings
both during and after school hours. In short, therapists who work for counseling agencies or are in private
practice come to our school buildings to conduct counseling sessions.

Note: Except in matters threatening imminent safety these services are confidential, even from the school.

What it isn’t...

School site counseling services are accessible at your child’s school, but are not provided by the school. The
therapists are not employed by the district nor do they represent the District in any capacity. However, all
participating providers and/or agencies have successfully completed a selection process to ensure children
and families will receive a high quality of care. School staff are unable to refer any child for these services
directly, and your child cannot access services without parental consent and participation.

What are the services?

The counseling services provided by the therapist are the same that would be if a child or family were seen at
their office. In addition, the same procedures and policies apply. Sessions can be both with the child and/or
with the family/parent. In most cases, Parents/Guardians are expected to attend the initial counseling
appointment with the therapist. During that session, the frequency of family sessions/parent involvement will
be discussed. If a parent cannot attend a session at the school, alternative days and times may be offered at
the therapist’s office.

What issues may be addressed:

The scope of the counseling will be mutually agreed upon by the therapist and the parent. Common issues
that can be worked on include, but are not limited to:

● Divorce and Family Concerns

● Behavioral Challenges/School Engagement

● Anger/Temper

● Anxiety and Depression

● Social Difficulties

How often will my child be seen?

Your child usually meets with a therapist for a 40-50 min session, weekly or bi-weekly (depending on your
agreement with the therapist), during school hours or after school (with access to the late bus or by parent pick
up options). For children accessing services during regular school hours, every attempt will be made to limit
the amount of instructional time your child will miss.

Who are the therapists?

Therapists are licensed/certified clinical social workers or mental health counselors. The following agencies
and practitioners are part of our school site provider network, as of April 2023.

● East Aurora High School: Gateway-Longview Behavioral Health, Horizon Health.

● East Aurora Middle School: Horizon Health Services.

● Parkdale Elementary: Horizon Health Services.

Is there a cost?

Yes, this service is the same as if you accessed a provider at their private office/clinic. The only difference is
that the therapy happens on our campus and not as a therapist’s office. Many of our providers accept most
insurances. If payment is an issue, the provider may discuss with the family potential options to eliminate
financial barriers.

What if my child is absent from school or cannot attend the appointment?

If a child will be absent on the day of the scheduled counseling appointment, the parent must contact the
therapist directly to cancel the appointment. Notifying the school of your child’s school day absence does not
qualify. The therapist is not part of the school staff and will not receive that information.

Who will know my child is receiving counseling?

This is a confidential service offered at the school but not by the school. All reasonable discretion will be
provided with only “need to know” individuals informed as it comes to recording class attendance, etc. There
will be no record of your child’s counseling in their permanent school folder. However, should the parent grant
permission, your child’s therapist can communicate and offer recommendations to school personnel as it
relates to the school day and support that school personnel can provide.

Questions/ how do I get my child referred for counseling?

A child/family can access these services with only parent permission/consent. School personnel (e.g. school
counselor, social worker) may suggest to a parent when services may be appropriate. There is paperwork
