Athletes of the Week

2023-2024 Athletes of the Week:

Week 1

a

Amar kept his hot scoring streak alive as he has scored in each of the 1st four games, but none bigger than his goal and game-winning assist in beating then nationally ranked St. Joes 2-1. Teammate and fellow senior co-captain Rhett Krieger had his finest moment controlling and dominating his goal box, making game-saving saves and being instrumental in the Blue Devil win. 

Week 2

a

 Emilia O'Leary is the EAHS female athlete of the week for cross country. Emilia led her team to the Oakfield Alabama Invite with the fastest time of the day and went on to win her race at the VVS Pre-State Meet Invitational.

 Ben Ziegler is the EAHS male athlete of the week for football. Ben had two TDs and an interception in the Blue Devil's 25-8 win over Tapestry/Maritime.

Week 3

Ryan Mumm is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys volleyball.  Ryan led the boys volleyball team to a 4-0 week, defeating 3 top 7 teams in the WNY poll.  He averaged 12 kills and 3 blocks throughout the week.  

Gabbi Barusic and Katie O'Brien are the EAHS female athletes of the week.  Gabbi and Katie combined for the game-winning goal in double overtime to defeat Springville 1-0.  

Week 4

a

Ben Wright is the EAHS male athlete of the week. Ben was the medalist for the boys' golf team in all matches last week as they once again won the division title.

Zoe Hoffman and Maya Keller are the EAHS female athletes of the week.  Zoe and Maya led the girls' golf team to victories over Starpoint and Depew last week.  Zoe has been a point scorer in every match this season while Maya was a medalist in both victories.

Week 5

Gabbi Barusic is the EAHS female athlete of the week for girls' soccer. Gabbi scored four goals including a hat trick in the senior night win vs JFK.

Sam Evans is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys' soccer. Sam, who leads the team in assists, also scored the game-winning goals in both the team's wins last week vs Springville and Global Concepts.

Week 6

Fiona Howard is the EAHS female athlete of the week for volleyball.  The girls' volleyball team went 2-0 on the week including a win over sectional number 1 seed Depew in a 5-set thriller.  Fiona recorded 7 blocks, 8 aces, 10 kills, and hit .750 for the week.

Sawyer Grad is the EAHS male athlete of the week for cross country. Sawyer is a freshman who displays what we want our student-athletes to be all the time, selfless and caring of his teammates.  This past weekend he helped pace a teammate in his race, and encouraged him throughout, even though he had his own race later in the day.  Sawyer's selflessness is a model for us all.  

Week 7

Norah Ferullo & Lilly Mruzik are the EAHS female athletes of the week. Norah led the cheerleaders to their best ECIC finish in years and was named an ECIC All-Star. She helped the team work through the season and has been a role model for the younger teammates.  Lilly is a member of the girls' swim team which won 9 of 12 events at the ECIC championships. Lilly was named the swimmer of the meet and won the 200 free, 500 free, 200 free relay, and 400 free relay.

Nate Roorbach and Owen Mack are the EAHS male athletes of the week. Nate had 33 assists as the boys' volleyball team defeated Eden to win their 3rd straight division title.  Nate also eclipsed the 2000 assist mark for his career, becoming the first male in school history over that mark.  Owen tied a school record with 6 goals in the soccer team's section playoff quarterfinal win over Tonawanda.  Owen is the 3rd player in school history to score 6 goals in one game joining Barry Hunt (2008) and Brian Grabon (1995). 

Week 8

Erin Zagrobelny is the EAHS female athlete of the week for girls' swimming. Erin won the 50 free and 100 back at the section 6 teams championships, and also hit the state mark in the 100 back, helping lead the girls' team to the section title.  Erin also was a member of the winning 200 medley and 400 free relays at the meet. 

Defender Charlie Meyer is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys' soccer. Charlie scored 2 headers amongst a sea of Steeler defenders along with shutting down their 43-goal scorer in EA’s 3-2  win in the Sectional Championship Game. 

Week 9

a

Owen Rung-Cross Country- A week after claiming the overall ECIC Title and earning ECIC First Team All-Star Status, Owen won the Section 6 Class C and Overall Individual Title, helping the EA Boys Team qualify for the NY State Championships, winning the Class C Team Title. Owen is currently the #1 runner in WNY among all schools and leads his #1 Class C State Ranked Team into the state meet this upcoming weekend.

Emilia O'Leary-Cross Country- Emilia continued her impressive season (a win at the VVS and McQuaid Invitationals earlier this year and taking the ECIC Div. 5 Title earning First Team All-Star status) by winning the Section 6 Class C Cross Country Championships this past Friday.  She helped her EA Girls Cross Country Team win the Class C Team Title as well. She and her team are both ranked the #1 Class C, individual and team, in NY State.

Week 10

Emilia O'Leary is the EAHS female athlete of the week for cross country. Emilia won the individual state XC title and led the girls to the class C team title.  The girls finished 2nd on the merge-ranking every team, all classes, in NYS. 
Sam Evans is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys' soccer.  Sam scored with 18 min to go in the state title game to tie the score at 1, and then again with 8 min to go to take a 2-1 lead, which was the final, and gave soccer their first state title in program history. 

Week 11

Zach Bell is the EAHS male athlete of the week for basketball. Zach averaged 11.5 points per game and 7 rebounds in two games as the boys opened their season with a win at McKinley.

Kailyn Houghton is the EAHS female athlete of the week for indoor track.  Kailyn won the 3000 meters on Friday night at Houghton College with a section-leading time of 10:38.  She also ran on the 4x800 team which won, and set the section-leading time in that event.  

Week 12

Catherine Schoeneman is the EAHS female athlete of the week for indoor track. She won the 1500 meters at the indoor track divisional this past Friday at Houghton College.  Her time currently ranks her number 1 in WNY in that event.

Weston Valentine is the EAHS male athlete of the week for swimming.  Weston won 2 races against OP last Tuesday- the 50 free and 100 back.  On Friday he led the team to victory against Cleveland Hill winning the 200IM and 100 Fly.

Week 13

Owen Rung is the EAHS male athlete of the week for Indoor Track and Field. Owen won the 1000 meters this past weekend at the varsity select invitational in a WNY leading 2:35.  Owen also leads WNY in the 1600 and 3200 meters as well so far this season.

Megan Cassidy is the EAHS female athlete of the week for basketball. Megan helped the team go 2-0 (wins over Allegheny-Limestone and Tapestry) since the holiday averaging 9.5 points, 4.5 rebounds, and 2.5 steals in those contests.  

Week 14

Jada Tresmond is the EAHS female athlete of the week. Jada's leadership as our team captain has helped the Blue Devils improve to a 4-2 overall record. Her ability to motivate her teammates, share positive feedback and keep the game fun for all has been a key reason for our growth as a team.  As a player Jada is willing to do whatever she needs to to help our team succeed. She is averaging 4 points, 1.5 Assists, 3.8 rebounds and 2.5 steals and has a knack for coming up with a big steal or making a key shot at critical times during the game. 

Jacob Winfield is the EAHS male athlete of the week. Jacob has a state cut in the 100 butterfly and is undefeated in all dual meets in that event. He also won the 100 back and 100 breast against Lake Shore last week. 

Week 15

a

Parker Nagy is the EAHS male athlete of the week for swimming. Parker won the 200 & 500 free this past weekend and was an important leg in the 200 & 400 free relays. Parker has qualified for sectionals in 3 individual events and is a pivotal athlete in our relays heading into the post season.

Alyssa Kingston is the EAHS female athlete of the week for basketball.  Alyssa scored 16 points and recorded 2 assists, 4 rebounds and 2 steals in an East Aurora victory over Eden. 

Week 16

Jacob Winfield is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys' swimming. He was a 4x winner at ECICs in the 200 Medley Relay, 200 IM (pool record), 100 fly (pool record) and 400 free relay and was named swimmer of the meet. 

Caelan Legg is the EAHS female athlete of the week for girls' basketball. Caelan came off the EA bench to help the Blue Devils overcome a 19-2 deficit by scoring 15 points.  She hit three 3’s and went six for six at the free throw line including two clutch free throws to tie the game late in the 4th and two clutch free throws to seal the victory.

Week 17

Zach Bell is the EAHS male athlete of the week for basketball. He averaged 10 points per game, and defended the rim for the boys' team that finished 3-0 last week.  Zach also averaged 5 rebounds per game.

Ava Ross is the EAHS female athlete of the week for cheerleading.  Ava is a 5 year captain and 6 year team member who helped the girls to a 6th place finish on Saturday at Orchard Park.  

Week 18

Owen Rung is the EAHS male athlete of the week. Owen won the 1000, 1600, and 3200 meters at the section 6 team champs leading the boys to a 3rd place finish.  

Kate Hillyard is the EAHS female athlete of the week.  Kate won the High Jump and was 2nd in the triple jump in helping lead the girls to the section 6 team title at the track and field championships this past Saturday.

Week 19

The EAHS male athletes of the week are the 4x800 relay team of  Ryan Defries, Gus Hoak, Owen Rung, and Shane Fraser.  The team won the section title by under 1 second over Hamburg, advancing to next week’s state meet.

The EAHS female athlete of the week is freshman PG Maddy Beiter. Maddy stepped up big time in a playoff win versus Newfane this past Friday night.  Maddy came in off the EA bench and played some great defense, rebounded well, took care of the basketball versus the Newfane press and chipped in with 5 points and 2 assists.

Week 20

Jacob Winfield is the EAHS male athlete of the week for swimming. Jacob finished 7th in the NYSPHSAA 100 Fly at the state swim championships and set a school record in the event of 51.31 seconds.

Megan Cassidy is the EAHS female athlete of the week for basketball. Megan averaged 8.5 points, 12 rebounds, and 3.5 steals in the section semi-final and final games this past week.  

Week 21

Kevin McGee is the EAHS male athlete of the week for unified bowling. At last week's section championship for unified bowling, Kevin earned the character award as EAHS placed 2nd in the section.

Natalie Dietsch is the female athlete of the week for unified bowling.  Natalie is one of the leaders of the unified bowling team and helped lead the team to their 2nd place finish at sectionals.  

Week 22

a

Rhett Krieger is the EAHS male athlete of the week for boys' lacrosse.  In a big league win vs Eden, Rhett was perfect on faceoffs with 19 for 19, and set a school record with 21 ground balls!  

Addie Miller is the EAHS female athlete of the week for track and field.   Addie won both the triple jump and high jump as the girls defeated Eden.  Her triple jump mark of 35’10.5 set a new school record!  

Week 23

a

Reiley Pierce is the EAHS female athlete of the week for track and field. She was a member of the winning 4x800 and 4x400 teams, along with winning the 1500 individually in the girl's win over Holland.  The next night at the Iroquois invite, Reiley won the 3000 meters and again was on the winning 4x800 and 4x400 teams.
Patrick Bodecker is the EAHS male athlete of the week for baseball. Patrick went 5 for 10 through the week with 5 RBIs, 4 runs scored, and 3 stolen bases.  He also earned the save pitching in the victory over Alden.

Week 24

a

Owen Rung is the EAHS male athlete of the week for track & field. Owen set the meet record at the Dunkirk Invite, winning the 3200 meters in 9:37.76.  Owen was also a member of the winning 4x800 relay as well.

Sydney Girardi is the EAHS female athlete of the week for lacrosse.  In last week's games, culminating with a 14-3 win vs Iroquois,  Sydney had 15 goals, 5 assists, and 32 draw controls.
