East Aurora Union Free School District Announces Campus Safety Enhancements
With the safety of our students and staff as top priority in our District, members of the Safety Committee convene five times annually to review and discuss various initiatives happening throughout our buildings.
Prompt emergency response preparedness plays a key role in keeping our campuses safe. Faculty and staff continually receive training to equip them with the necessary skills for handling a variety of emergency situations. Some training, such as fire and lock down drills, are familiar and ongoing. Supplementing these traditional drills with expanded trainings districtwide, enhances the safety of our school campuses and better prepares our students, faculty and staff for emergency situations. In the event of an emergency, we are confident that our buildings and students will be safe.
During the summer of 2018, the District Maintenance Staff installed a double entry system at the High School, similar to the double entry system at Parkdale Elementary. This system provides a secure space for visitors to enter the building, where they are able to stay warm and dry, without access to the educational areas of the building. As part of the current Capital project, the Middle School entrance will also include a double entry system, completing this safety measure districtwide.
Recently, the District implemented the Raptor Visitor Management System. This system allows us to better track visitors, vendors, contractors, and volunteers in our schools. When entering a District building, visitors are asked to present a valid state-issued ID that is scanned into the system. Upon approval, a badge is issued identifying the visitor, the date, and the purpose of his/her visit.
All visitors to the district need to be aware and vigilant in parking lots and driveway areas. Throughout the day students are arriving and leaving and buses are either dropping off and picking up students. This affords situations where individuals may be obscured by and/or dart out in front of vehicles. We ask all visitors to drive slowly and stay alert in these spaces when visiting our schools.
Finally, the District is proud to announce that it has once again received the highest level of recognition from Utica National School Safety Excellence Award Program. Additionally, four of the past five years the District has received the Titanium with honors level, a prominent designation we can all be proud of.
