    New York State Common Core ELA and Literacy Curriculum

    Core Knowledge Language Arts - Skills Strand 
    *There are Seven Units and each one has its own Student Readers which the students will use for partner reading and silent reading. (During Read-to-Self)
    *Students will reread the stories from their Readers several time to work on improving fluency (reading smoothly and with expression)
    *Students will be asked to look back in the text to answer comprehension questions about the stories in the Readers. 
    *During warm-ups students will practice blending and segmenting words.  (putting sounds together to make words and breaking words apart into individual sounds)
    *Students will have grammar lessons covering topics such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives.  They will also learn about statements, questions, and exclamations.
    *Students will practice reading words with 2 and 3 syllables and will use dots to separate the syllables. For example: un*der*stand 
    *Students will practice "Chaining".  This means that we will change one part of a words to make it into a new word.  
    For example: hot, hop, chop, chip, lip, lap 
    *Students will practice reading and writing "Tricky Words" (words that can not be sounded out or words that are not pronounced quite in the way you would expect based on the letters)  For example: one, said, of, were, have  The students will learn to notice the tricky parts of these words. (the parts that don't "play by the rules")
    *Students will learn Letter Teams such as ee in need,  aw in saw, oi in soil, ou in shout, oo in soon, ar in star, and oo in book.
    *Students will complete writing such as fictional narratives, descriptive writing, opinion pieces, instructional writing, and personal narratives. 
    *Spelling tests will begin during Unit 3. (All the words are listed on the "Spelling Words" page on this webpage.)

    Core Knowledge Language Arts - Listening and Learning Strand

    *The students will listen to the teacher read to them and then will ask and answer questions about the text.
    *The students will learn new and interesting vocabulary words associated with each topic.
    *The students will write about the information they have learned and will practice using their new vocabulary words in their writing.
    *Unit 1 - Fables and Stories

    *Unit 3 - Different Lands Similar Stories
    *Unit 4 - Early World Civilizations
    *Unit 5 - Early American Civilizations
    *Unit 6 -  Astronomy
    *Unit 7 - The History of the Earth
    *Unit 8 - Animals and Habitats
    *Unit 9 - Fairy Tales
    *Unit 10 - A New Nation: American Independence
    *Unit 11 - Frontier Explorers
    New York State Common Mathematics Curriculum 
    *There are 6 Modules (Units)
    Module 1 - Sums and Differences to 10
    Module 2 -  Introduction to Place Value Through Addition and Subtraction within 20
    Module 3 -  Ordering and Comparing Length Measurements 
    Module 4 - Place Value, Comparison, Addition, and Subtraction to 40
    Module 5 -  Identifying, Composing, and Partitioning Shapes
    Module 6 - Place Value, Comparison, Addition, and Subtraction to 100
    *During math warm-ups we will practice counting and will review skills previously taught.
    *Sprints (timed practice sheets) will be used to work on building speed and fluency. 
    *Math Application Problems (word problems or number stories) will be completed each day.
    *Students will have guided practice on dry erase boards and independent practice on Problem Set worksheets. 
    *5-minute addition and subtraction tests will be completed every other month.
