November 2019 Administrative Update

Parkdale Elementary Principal
The first few months of the school year have been an exciting time at Parkdale Elementary and I am happy to share some of our accomplishments and what’s on tap for the coming months. We kicked off the year a little earlier by holding our Open House and Supply Drop Off on Tuesday, September 3rd; prior to the first day of school. This model proved to work well by providing students a chance to visit the building, drop off their supplies, meet their teacher and fellow classmates and locate their classroom BEFORE the first day of school. This significantly eased some first day jitters for many students. In addition, those hot September days were made bearable due to the installation of air conditioning throughout Parkdale this summer.
Our Character Connections program continues to help students learn more about themselves and their classmates as they focus on character traits in a series of activity-based modules every 5-7 weeks. Thus far, we have completed lessons and activities focused on Respect and Responsibility. In the coming months, we will be learning about Empathy and Self Control. As part of this program, articles, activities and question starters are shared with parents via a newsletter and continued character building is encouraged outside of school.
Our PTO held a new fundraiser this year called the Fun Run. Over a two-week period, introduced with a Pep Rally, students and families collect either per-lap or flat-rate pledges, to support school established goals. Parkdale’s goals were established in $5,000 increments up to a maximum of $25,000. Parkdale Elementary students successfully achieved each goal in record time! With each school wide goal achieved, a special student privilege was unlocked such as being able to walk outside to attend daily specials, participating in an all school dance party, choosing their own seat in the cafeteria for a day, earning extra recess time and wearing their pajamas to school for a day. The culminating activity was a visit from Cocoa and Marshmallow, two alpacas that live in East Aurora! During recess, all of the students had the opportunity to enter the alpacas pen and visit with Cocoa and Marshmallow. Through the Fun Run, the PTO raised $41,397.96; enough to fund all of Parkdale Elementary 2019-20 field trips, assemblies, grade level speakers and author visits. The PTO, faculty and staff of Parkdale sincerely thank everyone for their generosity. We truly live in an amazing community. The next PTO meeting is scheduled for Monday, November 18th at 6:30 p.m. in the Parkdale Elementary Library. Childcare is provided and we hope to see you there!
With snowflakes soon to fly, I’d like to take a minute to remind everyone about winter safety. All students, including those walking to school or riding the bus, should remember to dress appropriately. Recreation is held outside every day for 25 minutes unless it is raining or the temperature drops below 15o. Please ensure your children are prepared with boots, a warm jacket, gloves or mittens, a hat and snow pants. Everyone on the Parkdale campus should always stay in designated walkways where snow and ice removal are facilitated by our staff. Be sure to use caution at entrances where snow is often tracked in and can make floor surfaces slippery. We take great pride in maintaining our building, but slick surfaces can occur both inside and out.
A few dates to mark in your calendar are: Wednesday and Thursday, November 6 & 7 – PTO Book Fair (Family Night is Nov. 6 at 6:00 p.m.). Our 2nd annual Turkey Trot is Nov. 15th at 9:30 a.m. when third and fourth graders will prep for a half-mile run in physical education class and race outside with the younger students cheering them on. It is a great way to learn about healthy living, the value of practice, and racing etiquette. Parent-teacher conferences will be held the afternoon of Nov. 26, the afternoon and evening of Dec. 5 and all day on Friday, Dec. 6. On Thursday, December 12 we will have our Grade 1 Concert at 2:00 p.m. and Grade 4 Concert at 7:00 p.m.
Thank you for your continued support of Parkdale Elementary.
