At the October 20 meeting of the East Aurora Educational Foundation, the board voted to approve two grant proposals. Both support New York State standards and reflect the Foundation's mission: To enhance students' educational experiences by funding grants for programs within the East Aurora School District.

Using E-Books to Support and Encourage Third Grade Readers was submitted by Parkdale School reading specialist, Christie Edholm in the amount of $1,087.16. Funding will be used to purchase 6 Kindle e –readers and e-books to support and encourage student reading. Third grade students will benefit by using this technology by using the interactive features, such as the built-in dictionary and text-to-speech features to deepen their understanding of what they are reading. By using the e-readers with her students, Mrs. Edholm hopes to bring “real world” reading, through electronic text in addition to printed words, into the classroom.

The second proposal, Flip Video Cameras, was submitted by East Aurora High School art teacher, Thomas Kegler. Funding in the amount of $750.00 will provide 10 “flip” video cameras to complement art courses. The use of this new type of camera will streamline the efficiency of both shooting and uploading footage into computers, and expose students to the use of current video technologies. Students will learn to use new “tape free” digital video camera through visual projects in Video Study and Editing, Yearbook classes, and Film Club. Students who are required to do film projects for other courses, outside the art program, will be able to sign out the cameras, as well.
