    East Aurora Middle School Chorus

    Handbook

    Welcome!

Thank you for joining the East Aurora Middle School Chorus!  You are joining a group which has become among the top middle school choruses in Western New York.  Previous students in this group have set a high bar of excellence, and I know you will also carry on in this tradition.

    Mission Statement

The East Aurora Middle School Chorus exists to work as a group, to the best of our ability, to learn, understand, and perform choral music.

    Objectives

Students will be able to achieve the following objectives in this course:

    • Learn how to improve their voice in pitch, tone and quality
    • Learn the proper techniques necessary for proper singing
    • Learn to sight-sing easy pitches and rhythms
    • Learn how to evaluate a chorus recording

    Procedures

Students will do the following during each rehearsal:

    • Walk in the room, get their own folder, and sit in their assigned seat
    • Participate in the vocal warm-up
    • Practice a sight-reading exercise
    • Rehearse choral music
    • Return their music at the end of class

    Concerts

There are three concerts throughout the school year.  Please check Mr. Blackwell's web page for the specific date.  All concerts are at 7:00 P.M., and are at the high school auditorium.  ALL CHORUS STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ALL THREE CONCERTS.  The concerts are considered similar to a final exam.  A student may only miss a concert due to an extreme emergency.  Transportation is not an acceptable excuse, as there are many wonderful parents who would be glad to provide transportation to and from the concert.

AN UNEXCUSED CONCERT ABSENCE WILL RESULT IN A 25 POINT DROP IN A STUDENT'S GRADE FOR THAT QUARTER.

    Concert Dress

Students are expected to wear the following for concerts:

    • Women: White dress shirt, black or dark bottom (skirt, nice pants, etc.), nice shoes
    • Men: White button shirt, tie, dark or black pants, nice shoes

    Grading

Students will be graded each 10 weeks on the following criteria:

    • Participation (50%): students will be graded on a daily basis.  Students will lose points for not participating in class.
    • Assignments (50%): Students will have one singing assessment, done either after school or during class.  In addition, there may be some written work.

Students will know their grade one week before the end of the marking period.  There will be extra credit opportunities available for students each quarter.  In addition, the singing assessment can be done numerous times.  Please let the teacher know if you plan to retake a singing assessment.

REMEMBER THAT AN UNEXCUSED CONCERT ABSENCE RESULTS IN A 25 POINT REDUCTION IN GRADE FOR THAT QUARTER.

    Concert Dates

All concerts are at 7:00 P.M.  They are located at the high school auditorium.  We share our winter and spring concerts with the middle school orchestras.

Please report to the high school at 6:30 P.M.

    • Winter Concert Tuesday, December 4, 2018
    • MS/HS Chorus Pops Concert Tuesday, April 16, 2019
    • Spring Concert Tuesday, May 14, 2019

    Transferring Out Of Chorus

There are two opportunities to elect out of chorus.  The first opportunity is from September 6 to 19.  The second opportunity is from January 14 to January 25.  A student will need a written note from a parent, stating that the student no longer wants to participate in chorus.  As group cohesiveness is essential to a quality performance, any chorus student who does not elect out during one of the two windows will need to remain in chorus until the end of that semester.
