    East Aurora Middle School Chorus

    Handbook

    Welcome!

Thank you for joining the East Aurora Middle School Chorus!  You are joining a group which has become among the top middle school choruses in Western New York.  Previous students in this group have set a high bar of excellence, and I know you will also carry on in this tradition.

    Mission Statement

The East Aurora Middle School Chorus exists to work as a group, to the best of our ability, to learn, understand, and perform choral music.

    Objectives

Students will be able to achieve the following objectives in this course:

    •               Learn how to improve their voice in pitch, tone and quality
    •               Learn the proper techniques necessary for proper singing
    •               Learn to sight-sing easy pitches and rhythms
    •               Learn how to evaluate a chorus recording

    Procedures

Students will do the following during each rehearsal:

    •               Walk in the room, get their own folder, and sit in their assigned seat
    •               Participate in the vocal warm-up
    •               Practice a sight-reading exercise
    •               Rehearse choral music
    •               Return their music at the end of class

    Concerts

There are three concerts throughout the school year.  Please check Mr. Blackwell's web page for the specific date.  All concerts are at 7:00 P.M., and are at the high school auditorium.  ALL CHORUS STUDENTS ARE EXPECTED TO ATTEND ALL THREE CONCERTS.  The concerts are considered similar to a final exam.  A student may only miss a concert due to an extreme emergency.  Transportation is not an acceptable excuse.  Please make arrangements with other parents to provide transportation for the concert.

AN UNEXCUSED CONCERT ABSENCE WILL RESULT IN A 30 POINT DROP IN A STUDENT'S GRADE FOR THAT QUARTER.

If a student misses a concert due to an excused absence, they will have to do a make-up assignment.  If the student does not complete the assignment, there will be a 30 point drop in the student’s grade for that quarter.

    Concert Dress

Students are expected to wear the following for concerts:

Students can expect a grade of 95 for average participation in chorus.  Students can do extra credit to get their grade higher, such as doing extra credit work on the teacher web page, singing in extra choral groups, auditioning for solos, etc.

    • Singing (50%) - A singing test will be done every quarter.  Students have the opportunity to improve their singing grade at any time.
