East Aurora Boys and Girls Cross Country Teams conquered the mountains
at Monroe-Woodbury to bring back individual and team titles at the New
York State Cross Country Championships.
The EAHS harriers brought home the double win again this year by winning both boys and girls individual and team titles, a feat accomplished only three previous times in meet history, including East Aurora's titles a year ago. This was the first time a school accomplished this two years in a row.
The boys team toed the line first and set the pace with Kenny Vasbinder leading from the start. Kenny's second individual title in two years helped lead his squad to the team championship scoring a low 36 points, 53 ahead of runner up Watkins Glen who scored 89. Following Kenny were: TJ Murray 5th, Ian Russ 18th, Will Zink 21st, Kevin Murnock 22nd, Matt McLaughlin 35th and Pat Murray 37th.
The girls team was ready when the gun went off with Sophia Tasselmyer and Fiona Danieu racing to the lead where they remained to the finish. Their 1-2 placing helped their team win with a low 35 points, well ahead of runner up Bronxville who scored 78 points. This was Sophia's second individual title in as many years. Following Sophia and Fiona's 1-2 finish were Molly McLaughlin 6th, Tori Klimowicz 17th, Maisy Webster 35th, Erin Cocca 61st and Emily Jason 66th.
"These were great team wins," Coach Walt McLaughlin said. "For our athletes to come out here and capture two individual and two team titles is just awesome, and for Fiona to finish second just adds to how impressive these two team performances were. This was without a doubt the toughest course ever raced at a state championship, and with our teams winning by such large margins, it shows how well prepared we were."
