Board of Education Meeting Digest for March 31, 2010

(4.1.10)

The public session of the Board of Education meeting was called to order in the Middle School Library at 7:00 PM by Board President Daniel Brunson.

Superintendent Bodziak's comments:

Mr. Bodziak requested that Middle School Principal Mark Mambretti announce a special event. Mr. Mambretti commented that the 22nd annual "Seniors in our School Day" will take place April 7 in the Middle School cafeteria, beginning at 9 AM with a breakfast, followed by student entertainment, including talent show winners.

Mr. Bodziak asked Business Manager Paul Blowers to address yesterday's news that Gov Paterson is going to delay school aid payments. Mr. Blowers said that East Aurora will be delayed in receiving about a million dollars until June. Mr.Blowers reported that the March 31will be delayed and that there is no legal requirement for the state to pay the end-of-the state year payment. He also said that the district's cash flow will not be affected, but that he estimated that the district would lose about $1000 in interest.

Board President's and Board Member's Comments & Committee Reports

  • Stephen Zagrobelny reported on a policy committee meeting last week and some upcoming topics that the committee will address.
  • MaryBeth Covert commented that the most significant upcoming piece would be a policy on the board policy manual.
  • Jim Whitcomb participated in the Senior Prom at the Senior Citizens Center, hosted by EAHS Key Club. More than 100 seniors and over 30 students enjoyed the evening.

Visitor Comments

Todd Hathaway, president of the East Aurora Faculty Association: "Last Thursday, the Association ratified Contractual adjustments that help in solving the difficult economic times we are currently facing. This vote provides a fair arrangement to the students, teachers, and the community, while continuing to allow for the high quality of education we deliver in the District.

Our members are parents and taxpayers in the community too, and we wanted to be part of the solution, not the problem. This was by no means an easy vote for the teachers, and no teacher enjoys making such difficult choices, but the membership decided that these changes were the best way for the East Aurora Faculty Association to assist the community in traversing these troubled economic waters. Together we intend on continuing to maintain our high quality education, of which the quality and dedication of East Aurora teachers is a major component.

We thank the Superintendent for his willingness to bargain with us, and the School Board for its continued investment in education."

Several visitors spoke in support of the music program, keyboarding and teacher aides, including Ryan Fiscus, Karen O'Connell, Erin Haffenden, Kaitlin and Emily Gelsinger, Greg, Anna and Claire Engle, Andy Hakes, Renee Ronan, Zoe Spindelman, Trish and Emma Bateman, Nathaniel Stoll, Susan, Holly, and Eva Tapani, Gwen Haffenden, Ana and Erica Davidson, Joseph, Katherine, Elizabeth, Grace and Mary Del Vecchio, Ernie and Heather Scheer, Karen DeSantis, Colin O'Connor, Emily Crowe, Christie O'Connell, Sue Coulter, Nina Arendt, Mary Cotton and Ben Davis.
