Even as students left Main Street Elementary School for the last time, staff members and contractors began clearing out classrooms to prepare for renovations. Many rooms were gutted the first week after school recessed for summer, with thousands of items and boxes moved and stacked.
The second and third floors of the west end of the building were emptied, with contents going either to storage within the building or to Parkdale, for teachers who will shift to other grade levels. In the natatorium, pipes beneath the pool are being repaired in preparation for new tiles, and the installation of new glass block windows is complete.
Outside, workers removed the former Main Street Elementary playground, to be moved to Parkdale for installation. By July 1, the old parking lot and asphalt play area had been removed as well, preparing to replace them with a new lot and green space. Parkdale Elementary Work on the second floor of the original building is nearly complete, allowing staff to bring back stored contents. The first floor has several areas to be completed throughout the summer months, including the cafeteria and other areas on the first floor.
