EXTRACURRICULAR ACTIVITIES AND ATHLETICS
Builders Club Mrs. Dusel, Advisor Grade 7 & 8
The Builders Club is a middle school club sponsored by the local Kiwanis Club. This is a service organization designed to contribute to our school community, East Aurora community, Buffalo community, and to reach out to the needs of the world.
This club meets over 20 times during the school year to plan service activities that included trips, Christmas gathering at the nursing home and Adult Day Services, assisting with the Kiwanis BBQ, and a Halloween Party with local groups. They also raise money for local charities.
Arts and Crafts Club Mrs. Willson, Advisor Grades 5 - 8
The craft club is open to any fifth-eighth grade student. The purpose of the club is to expose students to the vast amount of leisure activities that can reduce everyday stress. Students will learn ways to reuse various resources to create projects applying time management skills. Students will discover ways to use creativity in producing an end product enhancing their self-esteem. In addition, this club will make projects that will aid various community organizations.
DECA Ms. Desiderio, Advisor Grades 6, 7, & 8
NYS DECA offers an opportunity for students to participate in a co-curricular student organization at the middle school level. The Academy is open to 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. The students will be exposed to activities that promote leadership development, civic consciousness, social intelligence and a vocational understanding of business and marketing.
DECA is a great organization that allows students to make new friends, travel, to learn more about themselves and to help them choose a career path. Club meetings are typically on Fridays and other days are scheduled as necessary for club events. Eighth graders are allowed and encouraged to participate in National DECA activities including the regional competition, state leadership conference, summer leadership camp and the International leadership conference.
The EAHS also has a DECA chapter that members can become involved in this year and in future years. Consider making a commitment to DECA.
Drama Club Mr. Terhune and Mr. Davis, Advisors Grade 5 - 8
The middle school Drama Club is open to any student in grades six through eight. Our purpose is to expose students to the dramatic and performance stage, allowing students an opportunity to showcase and develop their talents. Students will learn about drama and stage direction and also build confidence with public speaking skills. Different styles of drama are presented from year to year.
This year there will be one 5th & 6th grade production and one production by 7th and 8th grade students. The Drama club meets between 20 30 times during the year. There are at least 30 40 students who participate on stage or work as stage crew. The Drama Club is also responsible for the Middle School Talent Show.
Explorers Club Mrs. Baker and Mrs. Pohle, Advisors Grades 5 - 7
The club offers students creative and unique experiences. Students will share and build upon their talents and interests outside of school. Students will also participate in community service and group activities.
Homework Club Mrs. Furman-Schwab, Advisor Grade 5 - 8
To help students experience success and develop individual responsibility through commitment to completing homework after school. Students complete work and receive individual tutoring. This club is offered to students in grades 5-8. International Club Mrs. Hoen and Mrs. Pastrick, Advisors Grade 7 & 8
International Club gives students the opportunity to explore Spanish and French culture through cooking, crafts, and language games. This is an enrichment activity directly linked to the NYS Standards 1 and 2: Language and Culture. International Club is best suited to language students in grades 7 & 8.
Each year over 50 7th & 8th grade students participate in International club. Students in the club were involved in cooking crκpes, enjoying Mexican churros and a French goϋter. Ojos de Dios, Maracas, French berets, Mola project, worry doll project and a Picasso project round out the exploration of arts and crafts in other cultures. Cross cultural scavenger hunts and international bingo help students expand their language skills and take yet another stop toward communication with and understanding people of other cultures.
Latin Club Mr. Serwicki, Advisor Grades 7 & 8
The EAMS Latin Club began with two over-arching goals in mind: to enrich the experience of those students who are studying Latin, and to promote the study of Latin and the Classics to the school-wide community. Over the past three years the EAMS Latin Club has been involved in a number of different endeavors, and has grown significantly. Here, students are given the opportunity to have fun with Latin, experience the language in a thriving energetic practical atmosphere, and meet and interact with other Latin students whose skill levels vary. Students are also given the opportunity to participate with the wider world, whether it is a local cultural event or organization or nationwide recognition. All of these opportunities help promote a deeper understanding of Latin as a language and a discipline; it helps develop individual student skills, it deepens students' relationships with learning, the school, and each other, and it broadens students' horizons. The current EAMS Latin Club has been officially chartered by the American Classical League as an active chapter of the National Junior Classical League. Intramural Sports Mr. Koselny and Ms. Meharian Grades 5 - 8
The Middle School intramural program reinforces skills taught in physical education class. All students have the opportunity to participate in team and individual sports. The emphasis of this program is enjoyable participation in physical activity for all students. Approximately 250 students participated in intramural sports last year.
Intramurals are scheduled from late September until the end of May. Any student may participate by signing up in physical education class prior to the beginning of the activity. Leagues are formed for most intramurals with a special tournament held for the students participating in wrestling.
Marching Band Mr. Davis, Advisor & Melissa Denny, Assistant
The Marching Band is a tremendous teaching strategy for music. Students learn teamwork, commitment, goal achievement, and pride in accomplishment.
The band meets weekly throughout the school year and there are over 120 students involved. The band will be participating 4 parades during the year. They also conduct fundraisers to pay for new equipment and to underwrite the cost of trips they may take.
Middle School Jazz Ensemble/Drum Circle Mr. Davis, Advisor
Jazz ensemble is an extracurricular ensemble that meets once a week and performs at school concerts. This is a select group of students based on an audition. Students are expected to practice their music and attend rehearsals. Students prepare music that is age appropriate, fun, and challenging. The ensemble music includes various jazz style and instrumentation, as well as active participation.
National Junior Honor Society Mrs. Pastrick, Advisor Grade 7 & 8
National Honor Society members are inducted into this organization based on their leadership, character, citizenship, scholarship, and service to the school and community. Members of this service organization are required to perform 30 hours of volunteer work during the school year in addition to participating in Honor Society sponsored projects. A minimum of 15 meetings are planned for the year, with additional time spent on group service projects. Seventh and eighth graders interested in induction are encouraged to be active in school and community events several months before the selection process begins in February of each school year. Service and leadership through churches, scouts, nursing homes, and school organizations is recommended.
Peer Mediation Mrs. Cole, Advisor Grades 5 - 8
As per the SAVE Legislation, it is imperative to promote a safe school environment to promote positive youth development, violence prevention and successful learning. We know that peers play an important role in influencing the behavior of young people.
Our Peer Mediators function as Peer Leaders, providing leadership and acting as role models for positive choices, conflict resolution skills, and promoting the bully prevention behaviors of acceptance, tolerance, empathy and kindness. Students already trained in conflict resolution skills at the elementary level will be selected as Peer Leaders/Safe School Ambassadors. Training will be ongoing. These Peer Leaders will promote a safe school environment by sponsoring such activities as National Youth Violence Prevention Week, Mental Health Week, No-Name Calling Week and other service activities related to healthy choices, bully prevention, and tolerance/acceptance.
Science Club Mr. Padmanabha, Advisor Grades 5 - 8
The Science Club encourages students to expand their particular interest in the science area. The club will expose 5-8 grade students (some events are open only to 7th & 8th grade) to science ideas, topics, and labs that would not be explored in their everyday classes. Some activities include students participating in the Solar Sprint and Science Bowl. February and March dates on the calendar are tentative. The club will meet everyday in preparation for Science Bowl and Solar Sprints.
Spirit Club Mr. Ambrose, Advisor Grades 5 - 8
Any student who is truly proud to be an East Aurora Blue Devil is encouraged to join Spirit Club. This club encourages students to become actively involved in East Aurora Middle School in order to ensure that the entire student body has a fun and memorable four-year experience. Spirit Club is open to all students in grades 5-8. From October to May, this organization runs and participates in a number of school related Spirit Activities. Not only does Spirit Club organize fund-raisers, but many FUN-raisers are facilitated throughout the school year. This club organizes school dress up days and spirit days, and in the past has organized classroom display decorating contests, and many more creative events to increase school spirit. Students who join are also encouraged to find new creative ways to make EAMS a spirited atmosphere. This club provides the opportunity to make friends while making our school a better place and a more positive school environment for students, teachers and everyone in the school community.
Student Council Mr. Walleshauser and Mr. Hill, Advisors Grades 5 - 8
Student Council helps develop leadership skills among students. It serves the community and school. The council provides opportunities for students to be involved in the life of the school, and establishes communication channels for students to have input in school decisions.
The Student Council Representatives are elected by homerooms (25 homerooms). The Student Council meets monthly to discuss issues pertaining to the school and to schedule after school events.
Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Mr. Hill and Mrs. Jones, Advisors Grades 5 - 8
The goal of SADD is to send a powerful message
. the vast majority of middle school students do not use drugs/illegal substances, alcohol or tobacco. The members of SADD communicate this message to the entire student body through various campaigns and activities such as Red Ribbon Week, school-wide assemblies, and SADD sponsored events. Members of SADD also serve as role models for their peers.
Technology Club (IA), Natalie Dutton, Advisor - Grades 5/6 & Grades 7/8
The club will meet at least once each month per grade level; 5th and 6th grade and 7th and 8th grade. The purpose of this club is to enhance tool and machine knowledge, increase technical literacy, promote safe and proper lab operation, and most importantly practice time management and problem solving skills. Projects will be determined by the instructor depending on material availability and time constraints. Tech lab will be utilized where students use a variety of tools and equipment. Individual projects must be pre-approved by the instructor. Maximum capacity is 20 students per meeting due to safety issues.
Yearbook/Publications Mrs. Converse, Advisor, Grades 5 - 8
This club is responsible for publications of the yearbook. The club provides students with the opportunity to learn to work cooperatively with each other. Students are involved in planning, layout and distribution of the yearbook. The club meets approximately twenty times from October through May on an as-needed basis. |
